About Me

does your child need a doctor right now?

Having three kids under the age of six is quite exciting. We never have a dull moment in our house and often have injuries and illnesses that need to be tended to by a doctor. I have learned a lot over the past six years about when a child needs to be seen by a doctor immediately and when certain things can wait until their regular pediatrician is available. I created this blog to help other parents learn about the injuries and illnesses that their children may experience when a doctor isn't available to take a child to whenever these things happen.

How Can Medical Testing Protect And Improve Your Health?

When you're feeling under the weather or hurt in a way that you can't remedy with over-the-counter solutions, your doctor's office is typically your first stop. Self-reported symptoms are a valuable diagnostic tool. However, symptoms alone may not tell the whole story. Doctors can learn a lot about the health of a person's body through direct examination. Medical testing can help doctors pinpoint the source of troublesome symptoms. Here are some ways that medical testing can help you protect and improve your health:

1. Look for nutrient deficiencies and other markers of diseases.

Blood tests are a valuable form of medical testing that can find nutrient deficiencies in your body. For example, insufficient amounts of B vitamins can lead to health problems such as anemia. Likewise, vitamin D deficiencies can lead to brittle bones, mood disturbances, and other symptoms. Your blood can be a valuable diagnostic tool. Lab technicians can also perform specific tasks to find inflammatory markers and other markers of diseases in your blood.

2. Check for broken bones.

When you have unexplained pain in your body, your doctor will want to rule out obvious causes. One way to do this is through the use of x-rays. An x-ray technician can x-ray the affected part of your body to check for broken bones. Bone fractures can cause pain and impairment and often need to be set and splinted to encourage proper healing.

3. Identify soft tissue damage.

Not all forms of injuries will show up on an x-ray. Soft tissue damage can affect your muscles, ligaments, and more. Fortunately, there are medical tests that can identify soft tissue damage. MRIs can be used to discover injuries to soft tissue. This diagnostic test can help your doctor prescribe the appropriate treatment to help you heal. Physical therapy can be invaluable for healing strained muscles and tendons. In some cases, surgery may be needed to repair torn ligaments and other injuries that cannot heal on their own.

4. Check the health of your nerves.

Your nerves are an important part of your body. They carry signals from your brain to the rest of your body, allowing you to utilize your sense of touch and move your body the way you desire. Some injuries and illnesses can compromise the health of your nerves. Nerve conduction studies can be performed to test the speed at which your nerves react to electrical impulses. This can tell your doctor valuable information about your nerve health.
