About Me

does your child need a doctor right now?

Having three kids under the age of six is quite exciting. We never have a dull moment in our house and often have injuries and illnesses that need to be tended to by a doctor. I have learned a lot over the past six years about when a child needs to be seen by a doctor immediately and when certain things can wait until their regular pediatrician is available. I created this blog to help other parents learn about the injuries and illnesses that their children may experience when a doctor isn't available to take a child to whenever these things happen.

Holistic Treatments For Frequent Headaches

If you have frequent headaches, you might take pain relievers to ease them. This works, but it's really addressing the symptom — the headache — instead of seeking to identify and address the cause of the headaches. Holistic treatments seek to heal the whole body and address the underlying causes of an ailment. Here are a few such holistic treatments to try for the relief of frequent headaches.

Drinking More Water

A lot of headaches are due to dehydration. Failing to drink enough may impact your blood volume, and a low blood volume can lead to headaches. Low water intake can also impact electrolyte balance, leading to tight muscles. When tight muscles pull on your face and head, this can lead to headaches, too. Therefore, drinking more water is an easy, holistic treatment for frequent headaches. Try keeping a water bottle with you all day and taking a sip every time you think of it. Alternatively, you could make a habit of drinking a glass of water every hour, on the hour.

Taking Magnesium Supplements

Magnesium is a mineral that your body needs for healthy muscle contractions and nerve function. So many people do not get enough magnesium in their diets. And a lack of magnesium in the diet can cause or worsen headaches. Taking magnesium supplements is, therefore, a good, holistic way of managing headaches. There are a few different types of magnesium supplements you can buy. Magnesium citrate and magnesium glycinate tend to be better absorbed by the body than magnesium oxide. Take the supplement according to the package instructions.

Using Peppermint Essential Oil

A lot of headaches are caused or made worse by stress and tension, especially through the forehead and neck. Peppermint essential oil can help reduce this stress and tension. Simply dilute a few drops of peppermint essential oil with an equal amount of almond or olive oil. Rub this mixture on your forehead and neck, really focusing on your temples. You can re-apply the oil every two or three hours, as needed, throughout the day. Try to do this before you actually develop a headache. It works best as a preventative measure.

Frequent headaches can really get in your way of enjoying life. Thankfully, there are some ways to holistically treat and prevent your headaches. Try drinking more water, using peppermint essential oil, and taking magnesium supplements. Chances are, you'll enjoy relief soon.
